Great Expectations
Marshall teachers and their principal have received specialized training from the Great Expectations program. Great Expectations is an eclectic approach that encompasses the very best of what is known about teaching. Drawing from many theories, teachers do what it takes to teach each student. The Great Expectations methodology focuses on the learning climate. Students become self-directed learners, productive citizens, effective communicators, critical thinkers, and cooperative contributors to the classroom, as well as to society.
The Great Expectations classroom is unique in many ways. A climate of mutual respect and high expectations is established by teachers who believe that every child can and will learn. Marshall teachers and staff build mutual respect in the classroom by eliminating putdowns and negativity. A safe place is created for students where they can take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them without fear of failure.
School success is guaranteed through whole group, small group, and individualized instruction. Teachers
attend to the learning styles of each student, use encouragement, Literacy First Phonics and Fluency program, and an integrated curriculum. Math, science, social studies, language arts, and fine arts are integrated and taught in conjunction with one another. Students are allowed to have real life experiences through the outdoor classroom which helps children to retain lessons because they are relevant.
Character is developed through recitations of poetry, quotations, "Words of Wisdom," and the use of classic literature. Students are also recognized and appreciated at Rise and Shine assemblies on Monday mornings.
At Marshall, our goal is to create harmony and excitement within the school atmosphere; elements that are basic for inspiring students to pursue academic excellence.
Marshall staff members help students achieve excellence by guiding them in adherence to the Great Expectations "Eight Expectations for Living."
1.) We will value one another as unique and special individuals.
2.) We will not laugh at or make fun of a person's mistakes nor use sarcasm or putdowns.
3.) We will use good manners, saying "please," "thank you," and "excuse me," and allowing
others to go first.
4.) We will cheer each other to success.
5.) We will help one another whenever possible.
6.) We will recongized every effort and applaud it!
7.) We will encourage each other to do our best.
8.) We will practice virtuous living, using the Life Principles outlined in the Great Expectations.
